Prefects and Camp

Well done to Jayshree - she was voted head girl by the senior students. Renee, Grace, Helen and Zara were all voted prefects as well.

Photos to come

Here is a summary of the named prefects

Head Girl - Jayshree (our tuakana!)

Deputy Head Girl - Hannah Anderson.

Sports Captain - Katerina Dimitrievska. Kat is a top level netball player and has just been chosen for the Shakers development squad. She plays Goal Keep or Defence for the most part. She is also a great basketball player and does lots of other sports too. She moved here from Europe when she was only about 6. Her mum works as a teacher aide at school.

Deputy Sports Captain - Claire Brown. Claire is a top level hockey player. Her mum is an award winning coach and there is a family sporting tradition.

Music Prefects - Emma Dowse and Kate Middleton Oliver. Emma plays the violin (I think!) and is in the school orchestra as well as conducting the small choir with Kate. Kate is in the concert band and plays the piano as well as singing.

Drama Prefect - Ivana.

Library Prefect - Sangita.

Camp

It looks like we will be going to camp in the second half of Week 6. That will be the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We will be going with 960 and 966. Notices will be going out later this week detailing what you need to bring and including some health forms for you to get filled in. It will be $90.

Camp is always really really fun and I urge everybody to go. You come back full of stories to tell and with new friends. Miss Campbell tries to make it possible for every single student to go if at all possible so that nobody misses out.

First Week Finished!

Well done! You've survived your first week at college. I know it was probably really difficult for some of you who didn't know anyone in 953, but I really appreciate how cooperative you have all been - taking part in all of the activities and speaking up when it was your turn. It seems like about half the class didn't know anyone else in 953 on the first day - so if you're feeling a little bit lonely you won't be the only one.

Trust me, within a couple of weeks you will all start to make great new friends. My best friend now is someone I met for the first time in my Year 9 form class - and that was 16 years ago now! I also just went to the engagement party of two people who were in my Year 9 form class, so you make life-long friends this year. Remember that if you see anyone sitting by themself at lunchtime or in class, it would probably make them feel good if you go sit next to them or suggest they come to where you're sitting. I'm an adult and I still feel a bit awkward when I go on courses where I don't know anyone and don't know where to sit!

I think 953 is going to be a really nice class. You cooperate really well and I think you behaved better than lots of other classes in singing and assemblies. Well done to the girls who had to help Mrs Jones with the overheads! She appreciated it. I hope the weta didn't end up in anyone's bag or shoes :)

I would like to thank our tuakana for being really positive and enthusiastic. We are very lucky to have you all! I think you make those first few days a lot less scary by being so friendly and giving good advice. And thanks for the lollies :) Good luck to you all in the prefect elections! Thanks for Renee for the fun games and 'inspirational story' about saving the crabs. Well done to Jayshree for being the only tuakana who lasted very long in a game of Splat.

Things to Remember for Week 2
- get your stationery if you haven't already
- bring your locker money on Wednesday to ensure you get one ($10 if you want your own one, or $5 to share - first in first served)
- bring your finished posters and contact details if you forgot last week
- bring your sports registration forms on Monday or Tuesday if you want to try out for teams

Warning
- I will be doing a really strict uniform check at one of the formtimes this week. Make sure you don't wear anything I would have to confiscate (rings, bracelets, necklaces, extra earrings).
- Remember to turn your phones OFF in class and keep them tucked away or you will lose them and most parents aren't too happy about having to come to school and collect them from the office for you.

Have a nice weekend! See you on Monday,

Miss Judge

Welcome to East!

The first day of school is over. It seemed to go fairly smoothly, but very hot! I'm going to use this site to put up photos from things like sports day and camp and also to put out reminders about things like notices, permission slips etc. It's not an official school website (that is at www.wegc.school.nz) but should be a good way to communicate things that only affect 953.

My name is Miss Judge and I am 953's form teacher and I will teach them for English. I have been at Wellington East for five years already (time flies!) and I teach English and Media Studies. I am also involved with basketball and the school magazine. I think it's a fabulous school with a really positive spirit.

They will be with the same group of 26 girls for their 'core subjects' which include English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, PE and Health, Music, Keyboarding and Art. They also have three 'options classes' that they have chosen to take, where they will be mixed in with other Year 9 students.

Our form class is Room 53, which is upstairs in the South Wing. It has a view over the Basin Reserve if you look out of the right windows.
You should already have
- a map of the school
- a school homework diary
- a sheet called 'What about...?' which you filled in with your tuakana

Tomorrow you need
- felts or something to colour in with (if you can)
- up-to-date contact details for your caregivers (phone numbers, addresses)
- find out if there is a house that a relative has been in (Bledisloe, Jellicoe, Fergusson or Onslow)
If you or your parents have any queries or comments, feel free to write them in the 'comments' section.
Looks like it'll be a nice class! I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better and hope you had a good first day at college and it wasn't too scary.

This afternoon the girls went in small groups for tours of the school with a tuakana (big sisters from Year 13). Start trying to learn names and faces of your classmates and tuakana! There will be name games and prizes tomorrow.
